stopmotion experimentation/update

hi everybody~

film development is going okay, still a bit stuck. but here are some experiments i've been doing, some successful, some not. but i'm learning a lot, like how i like creating illusions instead of showing literal objective action.

(i made the sound for this one ^^) the actual time of animation was only 2 hours (granted, it was 1am). but i've found that i get the freshest ideas from having big restrictions on my projects. something about the pressure just forces stuff from your brain.

next animation was done with a friend, Connie Leung. she came up with the idea of lighting from underneath.

the logistics ended up being terrible for this one, but i cobbled it together in about 3 nights. let's just say now i know what i should never do again, hahaha.

also i got my ball and socket armature kit in the mail last week! not cheap, but not unreasonable, either.

final armature drawing coming along~

i really need to practice drawing. noooo. can't get discouraged.

i really need a new banner, don't i? haha. it might be the least attractive one i've done, yet!
hmmm.

new developments

slowly exiting my mini film-crisis, but i'm still plenty worried about it. i realized that to sustain my momentum for the entire year, i have to make this film personal.

here are some sketches i did today. some new ideas. (though i think my old idea is the backstory to what might happen now)

(this photo is of a test armature i'm making before i work on my ball and socket armature, because i don't want to do felting for the first time on my final puppet, haha)

in high school i was obsessed with getting good grades

at university i was obsessed with getting good grades

at art school, getting me to write a paper..................

it's about midnight and i have a paper to write, haha.

granted! we have 2 days to write this paper because we're given 5 days to read 200 pages and watch a film. AANNDD i have 3 studios besides this english class.

CAN'T....DO IT....

i was asked if i was a freshman the other day, but somehow i'm a senior!

i can't believe it either.

pastel update

Haven't posted in a while because I've been busy busy at school. Been developing my senior film, and even though I prepared for it since last June....why is it so hard?? hahaha. Thinking, thinking, revising, and more thinking. We still have 7 months to go. On the other hand, we only have 7 months to go.

I've posted about my influences before, but the few that I keep going back to for direct inspiration are Antoine de Saint-Éxupery's "Le Petit Prince," Miyazaki's Ponyo, and Wong Kar Wai's films. Oh, also Joe Sorren's paintings, particularly "The Dance Before All Hallow's Eve."

For about a week I thought I had a locked story, but the next week I felt really irritated and unsatisfied about it, so I went back to what I wanted out of this experience, and it is certainly not to craft a linear narrative.

I felt into the trap again! But, starting over. I have, however, kept the character and background ideas.

Here are a couple pastel 3x5in. drawings I did a few weeks ago.

I am, for sure, doing another stopmotion film. The little red guy will be a puppet. I've named him Bertie.

I learned a lot from last spring, and I learned a lot from my summer internship. The only thing left is to not be afraid and do what I do best!

Admittedly, it's hard (really hard) not to think about the expectations. I hear a lot of stories about how people with stellar senior films go on to do amazing things right off the bat.

Depends on the artist, not the film. And so how are we not supposed to worry? Haha.
